The Lion War Society is one of the oldest war societies; it was founded, it is averred, during the wars with the Pendali, and fought originally as infantry, only much later as light cavalry. Their home is the city of Levane near the ruins of the city of Basmol, an ancient fortress of the Lion People. Some marched with Talor Laughing Warrior in the wars against Nieby when he returned from the Underworld, and those still in Seshnela have a distant and unsuspected kinship with the lion soldiers of Pelanda far to the northeast, including the Lasadag Lions of the Lunar Empire. It is rumored that their most secret rituals are performed in the tunnels under the ruins of the lion city, and that they have dealings with the Basmoli of Ralios who also go there.
